Before there was Malaysia and Indonesia, the vast land stretching from Papua to Siam belongs to the Malay race. They were free to roam from land to land. No questions of being immigrant even when one hop from island to island. The colonial came and drew the border lines, dividing this one big Malay community. Even if some of the Malays in Malaysia indeed came from Indonesia , that is only based on the current political context. Indonesian came here about 50 years ago as migrants and which welcomed by the government and given them the Bumiputera status as their looks is same as ethnic origins here.Anyway generally the Bumiputra is a Sanskrit word which means(Bhumi=earth,putra=son) and can be said as the son of soil.
