The government’s project to implement WIMAX in the country will start by the third quarter of the year. The project is undertaken by local MSC Malaysia status company, Packet One Networks (M) Sdn Bhd. According to Michael Lai, the company’s Chief Executive Officer, the commercial rollout of the broadband services will start then. He added that for the past 2 months, the company has since been making trial runs on some locations like the Kuala Lumpur City Center, Subang, Sentul and Setapak. He said “If everything goes as planned, our WiMax launch will be the world’s first large-scale deployment of an 802.16e 2.3-gigahertz WiMax network outside Korea,” He also said that there will be various applications offered under the WiMax umbrella like surveillance over WiMax, connectivity over WiMax, voice and video over WiMax. He said “The service will be formally launched once we complete our user trials and are happy with its consistency and performance at various locations in the Klang Valley,”

Seem the CEO, Mr Phuah of GP already annouced they wanted to launch WiMax as early as 2006 with their trial network... Today they want to launch Wifi... What a Joke..!
analogy, Wifi = bicycle, WiMax = Speed Car....

Now since never ending ,xxx 2006,xxx 2007 20th Jan 08, 3rd Mar08, 15th Apr 08, 19th May 08 (with Intel) 15th July08... This is the annoucement date... Where is the WIMAX ...

NOT wifi, wifi just a toy cannot even reach more then 0.1km as WiMax suppose to reach 100km.

haha what a joke! with the group of useless so called experienced telco-engineers in the subsidiary, this dream can hardly be fulfilled. Heard that they do not even possess the basic network knowledge, so how are they going to deploy wimax? see? If a person do not even know how to prepare the ingredients and no idea of how to use the cooking utensils, what kind of food they can produce??

This has just been a lot of PR baloohey. We've been lagging behind the wimax industry for years now. Even if it comes up, I heard that it's going to be at a speed of 1-2mbps only. Big whoop. Not so excited, personally.

haha Packet One making a joke again. Come on, be serious. We've already waited for 1 year and you guys from Packet One still doing testing and trial???

“The service will be formally launched once we complete our user trials and are happy with its consistency and performance at various locations in the Klang Valley,”

Is it the network engineers don't know how to solve it or their staff just don't have any idea on how WIMAX work? If the engineers don't know bout WIMAX please seek advice don't always pretend to know something but in the end don't know anything. That's the reason for the delay...FOREVER trials. If it does succesfully launch, as by the company name Packet One, the Wimax service from them is also packet by packet. Means SLOW~!! i doubt it will be faster than my current streamyx line.

This group of joker..! First 2006 said Mr Phua they have the secret weapon, the SonMetro Wireless Technology... Also just a joke only.

After listed their stock climbed as high as nearly RM5.00 then they also want to launch WiMax with forever news out there system on trial...

After GP stock price down till RM1.00 they said only launch Wifi...

We dont need a MESDAQ company to launch Wifi Network as you can buy the Wifi Access Device for only RM150 per unit at any IT store.... Moreover, if they wanted to launch Wifi Network, it is just a TOY as only maximum coverage 0.05km as compare to actual WiMax specification 100km...

What a joke .... ! Wake up Mr Phuah and Michael Lai we are no longer like the BN leaders any fool anymore as 21st century now information can access anywhere, even the char koay teow aunty know how to access to internet to get news la...

GP stock price : BIG SELL..!

To Paul Ngan,

Not viable project ..

Why ?

a) WiMax is just a Hype and promise by few keys manufacturers incl Intel, Motorola, Samsung, Lucent etc... as it suppose the next generation wireless broadband that compliance to the standard of IEEE802.16e BUT unfortunately till TODAY the Base Station cannot even meet the specification as the so called wireless broadband as it suppose to reached access till 100km but till today 08' the Base station only can perform less then 1km (Only 1% capability).

b) check www.commsday.com, published of WiMax failure in Australia issues 3237 , 24Mar08 : Australian WiMAX pioneer trashes technology as “miserable failure”...
Even, S.koren an ISP company that awarded WiMax license 2006 is returning the license to the Government, While Japan Gov also review WiMax license not to issues anymore due to the manufacturers could not meet the specification as the standard IEEE802.16e. Even, USA, Sprint Nextel after officially annouced WiMax in Jun07, their stock price drop by half and now big losses due to USD$ billion expenses on the non working products... What about Msia, where MCMC already annouced x4 WiMax license as early as FEB07 and today more then 15 months, non of the WiMax license holders launch a single Base station nor any customers (Green Packet, Red Tone, Asia Space & YTLE).

c) Even, USA, S.Korean, Japan also failed WiMax, Do you think these fantastic 4 companies in Msia can do wonder....?

d) G.Packet is just NATO (no action talk only) , The CEO , Mr Phuah been talking about WiMax and SonMetro Wireless Network since 2006, they never deliver more then 2 years, can he be trusted ?... See Star newspaper since Sept 2006 his handsome face already talking about Wireless Braoadband technology, so where ?

Why GP price keep on dropping from RM5.00 till lowest RM1.00 ?

Ans : They cannot deliver what they promise... remember GP if launch Wifi, that it is a big joke as Wifi only cost RM150.00 per unit at Law Yatt Plaza, why it take RM50 million to implement.. Mean they take alot of money in their pocket...

Wimax thru GP would be just like broadband with Streamyx, would take at least 5 years to make the service worth the charges. And who become the lab rats? We kind forgiving malaysian...not anymore, sorry brader, malaysians are sick of the government, their cronies and their (lack of) administration.

i think if the BN govt gets dragged down, lots of telcos and internet providers will start sweating beads cuz the international market will open up and we will see the likes of these giants providing better service and lower cost.

BTW, Maxis braodband is the mother of all f**ked up WWW access smilies/cheesy.gif

You guys talk so much about knowing how the mechanics of introducing a new internet service into the industry why don't you do it yourselves. Or better yet stop badmouthing other companies and stick to the so-called existing services and live with the lag. Wimax is rolling out soon. Currently few trial testers have been converted to full subscribers already. Making P1 official the first to roll out W1MAX in Malaysia. For those of you unlucky to have not visited PC Fair at KL convention center. Boo Hoo. Those who have had a experience of a lifetime as they saw miracles performed before their very eyes that no other broadband technologies can ever dream of doing. So stop badmouthing and be patient my young padawans!! The Force will be with you sooner than you think!!

We have to wait till it launch the wimax. Anyhow, i don expect a good roll out as the company still have less experiences on this products.

More over, people are upset with too many anmounces from 2006 till now. I see they might encounter many technical problems which lead them failed to launch it. What a stupid if you announced a project without a successful trial run!

for your info, wifi is just an additional services from gpacket to the government. It is just a collaborate between the govt with gpacket to provide KL wireless city (why do u guys complain, and yet you get free wifi in the city centre, which other telco do not provide and charge expensive)

wimax is still the core product of the company. apparently, they face some problem in deploying the new product. despite of that, they try to work it out. do you expect them to launch the product like maxis 3G which they launch few years back which have PLENTY of problem? the company is trying to solve and provide the best connectivity to the users.

If you followup really WiMax Technology.... Seem after the HYPES by Intel, Motorolla, Lucent, QualCom (pull out), Samsung plus smaller manufacturer, till date NON - Working commercial size except in S.Korean... But remember S.Koren spend USD billion in the technology for 24 months already and yet to achieve 2,000 subsribers, so do you think the WiMax project is ok ?

Japan Regulatory till date no issue any WiMax license and recently already declared Not going to have tender of WiMax license...

Spore Regulatory is the best place to prove the technology but till now Never award the license to any telco...

Vietnam VPT already installed FREE Base Stations x15 units from Motorolla but till today cannot commerciallize due to 1. Specification does not meet as suppose to show 100km access but only 1km (1% capability) 2. Biz model doesnot permit for a good return due to too many Base Stations needed to deploy..... Vietnam trial run since 2006 and 2008 VPT decided to take down the Base stations and return to Motorolla...

Europe Regulatories , giving up WiMax technology and Potential operators can get the license very cheap as NOBODY want to tender for license due to everybody start understanding is just a HYPE and no biz return plan....

USA, Sprints and ClearWired combine to launch WiMax in 2007 , Sprints stock drop more then 50% after made the annoucement , Today ClearWired already spend USD Billion but till date ZERO cusotmers.....

Australia, Non WiMax operators and nobody interested on the WiMax except Big Air operating Fixed WiMax (5.4GHz) where only target corp customers and IP wireless already has 60k customers but using Navini technology.....

China & India, WiMax few trial since 2004 but all failed incl a corp name AirSpan a joint venture between China Gov and Intel corp and Samsumg but the Basestations (x20) already trial since 2006 yet till date cannot commerciallized due to the Base station only can perform 1km coverage ....

S.Africa, WBS is selling Wimax at 2.3GHz but not at a big scale due to Regulatory will take back the license if still dont make use of the frequency instead they have 70k customers on iBurst technoogy from Kyocera, Japan....

Middle East, Saudi Arabia, try alot of fixed Wimax but only use as a back bone (point to point tx) not last miles however, WiMax never deploy due to limitation of coverage.......

Conculsion :
Today, in the World NON commercialize WiMax at 2.3GHz was successfully and more countrie eg Europe, Japan, S.Korean, Australia, etc are not interested anymore on WiMax... so why you think G.Packet and other x3 operators can do it ??? If they deployed then it will have no commercial biz plan sense rather just boost the news for G.Packet share value boost only....
