Sony Ericsson latest release will surely give digital cameras a run for their money. They will be releasing a phone with a high-resolution 8 megapixel camera, a world’s first. Up to date, the highest resolution cameraphones have gone up to 5 megapixels. The C905 Cybershot will start selling in Q4 and most believe that other mobile phone makers will definitely roll out their own versions soon after. Even Nokia, known as the “world’s largest camera maker†who will be releasing their N96 model, comes only with a 5 megapixel resolution. According to Neil Mawston, an analyst with Strategy Analytics, "The mobile cameraphone industry is closing the quality-gap on portable digital still cameras and this represents an opportunity for growth and new markets. Sony Ericsson is trying to regain the initiative as a mobile-imaging-leader, after losing momentum to Samsung and Nokia in recent months," At the moment, Nokia holds 34% of the cameraphone market while Sony Ericsson is only at 11% while Samsung is ahead with 20%. From the Nokia camp, Soren Petersen, the head of product portfolio said that they will be setting the benchmark at the top-end of the phone market. "In ultra high-end we have stuff in works, but I could see some more there in terms of setting the bar. I could see a combo of 8 megapixel camera, big touch screen, still with a Qwerty keyboard."
