Sony Ericsson latest release will surely give digital cameras a run for their money. They will be releasing a phone with a high-resolution 8 megapixel camera, a world’s first. Up to date, the highest resolution cameraphones have gone up to 5 megapixels. The C905 Cybershot will start selling in Q4 and most believe that other mobile phone makers will definitely roll out their own versions soon after. Even Nokia, known as the “world’s largest camera maker” who will be releasing their N96 model, comes only with a 5 megapixel resolution.
According to Neil Mawston, an analyst with Strategy Analytics, "The mobile cameraphone industry is closing the quality-gap on portable digital still cameras and this represents an opportunity for growth and new markets. Sony Ericsson is trying to regain the initiative as a mobile-imaging-leader, after losing momentum to Samsung and Nokia in recent months,"Â
At the moment, Nokia holds 34% of the cameraphone market while Sony Ericsson is only at 11% while Samsung is ahead with 20%.
From the Nokia camp, Soren Petersen, the head of product portfolio said that they will be setting the benchmark at the top-end of the phone market. "In ultra high-end we have stuff in works, but I could see some more there in terms of setting the bar. I could see a combo of 8 megapixel camera, big touch screen, still with a Qwerty keyboard."

It depends on how good the tech is if cameraphone is to compete with digital camera. Cameraphone start with small pix and gets better by the day, so will you be surprised if it does replace digital cam one day.?

current technology still puts camera phones a great distance from good compact cameras (let's not even talk about SLRs). Even if they come up with a 15MP camera phone, the optics, sensor size, functions, etc just aren't comparable yet.

It might fool some fools who think that more mega pixels is always better, but most tech savvy people know better smilies/smiley.gif

Yeap, it does not mean higher megapixels the camera is better... Especially in low lightings it is no point if your cam is 10 megapix but the shutter speed is slow and sensors are not sensitive because youre still gonna get the picture blur.
But i believe that Sony Ericsson is able to produce a camera phone that is comparable to a normal digital camera.. Its it ok for normal use la. not for those professional shootings smilies/wink.gif

convergence is not a good idea unless its for convenience.

Sony Ericsson is going to lose a lot of money trying to use camera phones to make digital cameras obsolete.

True, high resolution camera phone will not replace digital cemara. But it will be dominating the daily and casual use of photography. You won't carry your sophisticated digital camera with you 24/7 but a mobile with 8-mega-pixel is more than enough to do the average job, unless you are an photographer. I am looking forward to it.

Unless, the resolution of a camera phone is at par with a digital camera of the similar megapixels;the camera phones are not going to replace digital cameras.
This trend is like having Three-in-one or five-in-one gadgets we used to have in recent past, who were never able to replace the individual gadget/device.

professional photographers is less than 1% of the digital camera market the other 99% is casual users who want something that is easy, compact and economical. Sony erricson had defenitely hammered in the last nail on low and medium end digital cams.

try reduce the price so that every1 can afford good phone with nice price 1st lar..8 megapixel or more..how many people afford to buy? price of this increased, prices of that increased, every goes up..1 thing never gone up - salary...where got money to buy?

5 megapixel already out for a specific long time..stil i cant afford 1...zzzz...

besides, if wanna beat digital camera market, try put optical zoom function first lar..bigger megapixel also no use, cos digital zoom like shit..if got optical zoom, 3.2 megapixel pic also very perfect adi...
