David Wong, the chairman of Pikom (Association of the Computer and Multimedia Industry of Malaysia) said that the organisation is proposing a 5 year plan to grow the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) to make it readily available for the ‘man in the street’. Pikom will work to make ICT more pervasive in the local industries while globalizing local companies and seek to expand the domestic market by 50%. He said “There is a difference between relief and rebate. A relief is multiplied by your tax bracket so if you are in a low income bracket, lets say 10%, what you get is 10% of RM3,000 which is RM300. A rebate ... whatever your taxable income is, you just deduct RM1,000.” He added that “We did not foresee the changes (that occurred) in the last 10 months. Inflation is very worrying but compared to other countries we are still (doing) okay.”
