The multi racial People's Progressive Party (PPP) is a political party and a component of the ruling Barisan Nasional in Malaysia. formed in 1953, the Seenivasagam brothers started off as an opposition to the then ruling Alliance Front. Its first president D. R Seenivasagam was a popular icon then but saw them joining the Alliance for a while around 1957. The party would then later become an opposition party again and was so strong in 1969 that it nearly became the State Government of Perak. They failed to do so due to losing out on 2 seats in the state level.

The PPP changed its philosophy in 1973 when it became one of the members who formed the Barisan Nasional (BN) which PPP was instrumental in keeping the votes from the Indian and Chinese then. From a strong party that could challenge for state government, they lost terribly in the 1984 General Elections under the BN banner where they lost almost all their seats.

Currently under the M Kayveas leadership, its members exceeds 300,000 who carries a membership card. The party is made up of a multi-racial mix of 48% Indian, 32% Chinese, 13% Malays and others.

2 years prior to the recent elections, Kayveas proposed to merge the party with Gerakan, a move very much welcomed by the Gerakan members but was not seen through up until the elections where PPP more or less could not hold on to any of their seats.
