The Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) or the United Sabah Party was formed in founded by Datuk Joseph Pairin Kitingan, who formed the party after falling out with the then Parti Berjaya's president Harris Salleh, who was also the then Chief Minister of Sabah. The ‘Malaysian Multi-Racial Political Party' which the party positions itself is seen by many as a Kadazan-Dusun political party which they claim to be in the struggle to safeguard the states autonomy rights, promote the principles of democracy, economic advancements, human rights and justice. The PBS, won the general elections in 1985, which they then joined the Barisan Nasional coalition after the 1986 state elections. In the following state elections in 1990, PBS withdrew from BN and won the state elections. In 1994, prior to forming the state governments, many PBS representatives switched over to BN which then gave the majority back to the national front. In 2002, PBS rejoined BN which subsequently see the national front heading the state. Datuk Seri Panglima Joseph Pairin Kitingan has had his biggest victory in the elections when he went in as an independent candidate at the Tambunan by-election seat in 1984. This was at a time when he was receiving unending threats, alleged ‘vote-buying' against him, which he eventually won. His victory incited a revolutionary and new stand among politicians in the state for a new change among the arena. It started a new movement whereby the people of Sabah were pushing forth for political change and challenging of rights, disrespect and abuse of political power among many issues. The candidates began to support Datuk Pairin and eventually in 1985, formed the PBS. In the following 1985 state elections, PBS managed to win a landslide 26 out of the 48 Legislative Assembly seats, thereby giving them the simple majority to form the state government, with Datuk Pairin slated to become the Chief Minister. This was then eventful that the losing party attempted in swearing in as the CM, which led to a major court battle, eventually won by PBS. However, the PBS was rulling the state under pressure and PBS issued another state elections in 1986, which they won more convincingly, gathering 34 of the total 48 seats. In the 1990 state elections, PBS won their third term as state government, winning 36 seats. However, PBS left BN in 1990 and went into the 1994 general elections with great challenge from BN candidates, but they managed to win the elections, albeit with a lower majority. But although they won the elections, their ruling term was short lived after an exodus of PBS Assemblymen jumped ship to BN or to independent parties thereby ruling PBS out of the state government which prompted the resignation of Datuk Pairin as Chief Minister. In the subsequent elections, PBS still won their seats although they no longer could form the government. In 2002, PBS rejoined BN. Helmi - MalaysiaToday.com.my
