JAKARTA, Aug 30 — A brouhaha in Indonesia over Malaysia’s usage of the Balinese pendet dance in a tourism commercial has now shifted to another controversy involving the Malaysian national anthem.

Indonesians were up in arms after seeing the commercial on Malaysia that featured the pendet dance.

Kuala Lumpur had apologised for the use of the Balinese dance but said the mistake was made by a third party who was paid by Malaysia’s Tourism Ministry to produce the commercial.

The Malaysian embassy in Jakarta said in a statement earlier this week: “Nobody in Malaysia claimed that the pendet dance originated in Malaysia.”

But that is not the end of the story.

A report in yesterday’s Jakarta Globe newspaper quoted an executive from a state-owned recording company as asking why Malaysia’s national anthem “Negaraku” sounded like the Indonesian song “Terang Bulan” (Moon Shine).

Ruktiningsih, the head of recording company Lokananta, urged the Indonesian government to act on the “violation of intellectual property rights”.

“We have to unite against Malaysia, as they keep stealing Indonesia’s assets,” he added.

An Internet search found that both songs do indeed share the same roots. Malaysia acknowledges as much on a government website detailing its monarchy system.

The song “Terang Bulan” comes from a popular French melody in the Seychelles, which spread to the Malay archipelago in the early 20th century.

It was adopted as Perak’s state anthem in 1901. And in 1957, it became the national anthem for Malaysia with the lyrics changed.

This tangle is just one of many controversies between the neighbours. Indonesians see Malaysia as appropriating their cultural assets, while Malaysians say these have been part of their culture for as long as anyone can remember.

The controversies include batik designs and the popular “Rasa Sayang” ditty. The neighbours have also not settled overlapping claims in the oil and gas-rich Ambalat area in the Sulawesi Sea.

Speaking to The Sunday Times yesterday, Indonesian Foreign Ministry spokesman Teuku Faizasyah said bilateral ties between both countries were still strong despite the hoo-ha.

An Eminent Persons Group comprising officials from both countries is looking into ways to smooth over these tensions.

“One idea is for the joint promotion of tourism and their shared cultural heritage,” he said. — The Straits Times Singapore

So if the Balinese are Hindus, does it make India take action against them?
There is no wrong done here, but, why bring this up now?

There are borrowed words in the english language e.g. french, latin etc.
There are borrowed words in the malay language. There are borrowed words in the Philipine langauage etc etc.

Why make a big deal out of this.

Just be proud it is part of you and it is part of us as South East Asia.

If this goes on, then alot of people will be suing each other.

Kita serumpun, maka penyelesaian perlulah matang.

Sejarah dicipta utk kebaikan. Sejarah juga boleh 'direka' untuk keburukan.

The feud between ours and the indons' could mainly be due to the fact that the malays have not much of their own culture and traditions and therefore ended up having to borrow some from their origin counterpart which subsequently backfired.

There are many such instances such as the above, Indonesia had been claiming that Malaysia did using their culture to promote tourism and songs. It is not a surprise for me, it iis indeed that majority of the modern malays are from Indonesia. Malays came from Indonesia .... it is not a issue .... the malay should be proud because at least they know where is their origin, just like the Chinese & Indian ... they should be proud too because they too know where is their origin.

But the above issue is a well thought lesson for warisan tm k, yustam, mai bai, nt pretender, maa .... etc...... for they always call the chinese and indian the pendatang. Now their own ancenstors ( Indon) didnt want them (modern malay) to claim some their cultures as malay culture .... so it seems like they are just like the chinese & indian.... they too are the pendatangs of Indon. warisan tm k, but it is worst ... you ancestors didnt want you to claim some of your culture as malay culture.

As i have mentioned before, we Malaysia, whether you are a native or pendatating from Indon, China, India .... etc we all Malaysian.
What is the farking point of people like warisan tm k, yustam, maa, nt pretender, mai bai .... etc.... used to call the non bumis "pendatang". The above issue shall be act as a well learned lesson to those racist paid bloggers.

The above issue is an eye opener to all MALAYSIAN and the timing is just right for all the Malaysia to celebrate our ..........

...........HARI KEBANGSAAN MALAYSIA!!!!!!!!!

...........HARI MERDEKA.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

............HARI ANTI RACIST !!!!!!!!!!!

MERDEKA !!!!!

Two ways to have unity in the country. Either Malaysia be given back to the British as it was before independence, or be given back to the Chinese who builted, nurtured, and developed Malaysia, all this while. Other than above, there is no way Malaysia can be united.
