KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) - - The young man who has accused Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim of sodomy said Friday he had visited a mosque to swear he was telling the truth and challenged Anwar to do the same.
The move came a day before Anwar is due to register for a by-election in his home state of Penang that is expected to return him to parliament despite the charge -- the same allegation that saw him jailed for six years until 2004.

Mohamad Saiful Bukhari Azlan, a 23-year-old former volunteer in the opposition leader's office, denied he was laying down the challenge in an attempt to derail Anwar's chances in the August 26 by-election.

"No it is not a political matter," he told a press conference where he played a video of him sitting at a city mosque making the oath on the Koran, the Islamic holy book.

"It is just by coincidence that I made the oath today. God gave me the strength to do it," he said.

"By swearing in God's home's that I was sodomised by my employer, I challenge Anwar Ibrahim to swear and to do it in a mosque, to deny my allegations."

Anwar has said that the allegations are a government conspiracy to prevent him from seizing power, after March general elections that handed the opposition unprecedented gains including a third of parliamentary seats.

Sodomy is a serious offence in Malaysia, a conservative and predominantly Muslim nation, and carries a penalty of 20 years' imprisonment.

Anwar was formally accused in court earlier this month, but the charge indicated the alleged sex act was consensual.

Mohamad Saiful said however Friday: "I would like to emphasise that it happened by force, without my permission."

"This is the first time I was sodomised," he said, denying he had a romantic relationship with Anwar.

Anwar was sacked as deputy premier in 1998 and convicted on sodomy and corruption counts widely seen as politically motivated. He was released from jail in 2004 after the nation's highest court overturned the sodomy conviction.

No more legal means, turn to religion lah. Hey Saiful, you got your pay yet ? I sure hope you are not stupid enough to start all these before Umno pays you man. If you have yet to received your pay or full payment, that you can already kiss it good bye. By trying to make more moves will only make you look more stupid. Money might help you for a while but that is all, and if you are stupid enough not to have even money already promise, that for you it is curtain call. Bye.

What is the point of making an oath in this new age? If it was centuries ago swearing is a big deal the swearer is bound by the swear. Now everybody is making all kinds of oath in front of the commissioners of oath and in court, and in black and white written form but no want seem to take this seriously in spirit.

Anwar fears any oath he takes may be manipulated

BUKIT MERTAJAM: PKR adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said here he would not take any oath in connection with the sodomy charge he faces for fear it would be manipulated by certain quarters.

He claimed that his sodomy accuser, former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, had sworn on the Quran on purpose in an attempt to deny him victory in the Permatang Pauh parliamentary by-election on Aug 26.

"What is there to proof? The report is out. There is no incidence of sodomy. He (Saiful) wants to swear. He knows there is no (sodomy) case, and that is why he is embarrassing me during the Permatang Pauh by-election," he told about 1,000 people at a "ceramah" (talk) in Taman Cermai in Permatang Pauh here last night.

Ipoh Timur Member of Parliament Lim Kit Siang and Bukit Mertajam MP Chong Eng, both from the DAP, were among the leaders present at the function. Last Friday, Saiful swore on the Quran at the Federal Territory Mosque in Kuala Lumpur that he was speaking the truth when he accused Anwar of having sodomised him on June 26.

The by-election in Permatang Pauh has been necessitated following the resignation on July 31 of the MP, PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, to pave the way for her husband Anwar to get into parliament.

It is a three-corner fight among Datuk Arif Shah Omar Shah of the Barisan Nasional (BN), Anwar and Angkatan Keadilan Insan Malaysia (Akim) president Hanafi Mamat. - Bernama
